CAN PRESIDENT   (Elected Officer Position)
This position is responsible for providing guidance and vision to the organization including goal setting and strategy cultivation.
Description:

  • Ensures that the Board of Directors, Advisory Council, and all other Chapter Members are fully informed of association conditions and all important factors influencing them. 
  • Attends all meetings of the Board of Directors & Monthly Membership Meetings
  • Plans, formulates, and recommends for the approval of the board of directors basic policies and programs that will further association objectives.
  • Executes all decisions of the board of directors except when directors specifically make other assignments.
  • Develops specific administrative policies, procedures, and programs to implement the general policies of the board of directors.
  • Plans the general administration of the entire association operation.
  • Directs and coordinates all approved staff programs, projects, and major activities.
  • Provides the necessary liaison and staff support to committee chairmen to enable committees to properly perform their functions, ensures that committee decisions and recommendations are submitted to the board of directors for approval.
  • Executes contracts and commitments as authorized by the board of directors or within established policies.
  • Exercises control of budget and all arrangements to meet financial objectives.
  • Acts as spokesperson as needed or when association officers are unavailable.
  • Carries out other general responsibilities as officers and board of directors may request.
  • Establishes positive working communications of mutual respect with the following: 

     (1)  Leadership of the Board of Directors
     (2)  Board Committees
     (3)  CAN Committees
Qualifications:
  • BS/BA degree from four-year college or university
  • 2+ years of experience working on a board of directors or in an officer capacity either in a corporate or non-profit setting or within candidates respective alumni chapter (latter is preferred but not pre-requisite)
  • Must be able to attend CAN monthly membership meetings and other meetings as identified throughout the course of business
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Committed to being a team player
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Must be an active part of CAN (at least 2 years) and have a strong working knowledge and understanding of the organization, the mission statement and its members
 
CAN VICE PRESIDENT   (Elected Officer Position)
This position works closely with the President to set long term vision of organization while keeping short term goals on target.
Description:
  • Acts/serves as the president/chair in his or her absence; assists the president/chair on his/her specified duties or other duties as designated.
  • Frequently assigned to a special area of responsibility, such as membership, media, annual dinner, facility, or personnel, sponsorship
  • In instances where there is too much work generally or in a particular area for the regular officers the Vice-President has whatever role is set in the By-laws.
  • Acts as spokesperson as appropriate.
  • Research and investigate new program opportunities and work with the President to develop new initiatives. 
  • Research and identify perspective partners and sponsorship opportunities and work with the President to implement.
  • Suggest and establish strategy and fundraising goals.
  • Evaluate how goals are being met.
  • Works at the direction of the President to plan, schedule, organize, direct, and evaluate CAN’s fundraising plan and programs.
  • The Vice President maintains a close working relationship with the CAN President, CAN board, various committees and the Advisory Committee to communicate CAN’s plans and progress. Contact with Social Committee and Sports Chair and volunteers to coordinate all events (social, community service, membership, fundraising).
  • The Vice President cultivates and maintains relationships with partners, sponsors, business and community leaders, media representatives, to promote CAN.
  • Provides the necessary staff support and leadership to execute the strategic plan, its programs and implement its objectives development program and fulfill its objectives.

CAN TREASURER      (Elected Officer Position)
Position is the principal financial officer of the Organization.
Description:
  • Responsible for  (a) the maintenance of adequate books of account; (b) all accounts receivable and payable (c) monthly & year end reconciliation
  • Reviews all receipts and disbursements, ascertains correct account distribution and ensuring all support documentation is accurate and in order
  • Ensuring that all funds are properly deposited in organization’s designated depository. reconcile On-Line Merchant account receivables & create financial reports
  • Render monthly and annual financial reports of the corporation to the Board of Directors.
  • Overseeing the preparation of the annual budget and monitoring its implementation.
  • Work with our outside CPA firm to ensuring that all Federal, State, and local financial reports are filed on a timely basis.
  • Contract with an independent CPA to conduct an annual financial audit.
  • Signing financial forms and instruments as necessary.
  • Carry out Treasurer duties while adhering to the CAN organization’s mission & strategic plan to fulfill the mission
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks software
  • Knowledge of fund accounting systems and internal control requirements.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial statements, budgets, and budget projections.
  • Ability to work in a team and to delegate responsibility.
  • Ability to develop methods or make recommendations of maintaining positive cash flow.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the purpose and programs of the organization.
  • Knowledge of and skills in financial planning.
  • A CPA License a plus but not required
  • Past Treasurer Board experience strongly recommended
 
CAN SECRETARY  / MEMBERSHIP   (Elected Officer Position)
Oversees and provides all record keeping and membership inquiries for organization.
Description:
  • Attend Board meetings as a voting member
  • Take minutes at monthly membership meetings and at Board Meetings
  • Record and maintain minutes for the membership
  • Maintain Bylaws incorporating Board approved revision
  • Track items for action and/or follow up
  • Respond to membership inquiries
  • work with AC Director to update AC Chapter Members
  • Assist President upon request with various personnel duties

 

 

Qualifications:
  • BS/BA degree from four-year college
  • One or more years experience working on a Board of Directors or in an officer capacity – preferably on an alumni chapter

SPORTS DIRECTOR
Position is responsible for overseeing all existing and future sports leagues.
Description:
  • Coordinates 5 sports leagues (volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, flag football)
  • Identifies candidates for commissioners for each sports league
  • Coordinates any 1-time or annual sports events for CAN (ex. golf tournament)
  • Works with social chair on all sports-related social event planning
  • Works with CAN board to identify various sponsorships for sports leagues/events
  • Maintains the sports areas of the CAN website
  • Communicates with coaches at different times throughout each sports season
  • Maintains all sports leagues timelines
  • Maintains all CAN-specific rules, and all rules for each sport.

Qualifications:

  • BS/BA degree from four-year college
  • Board experience desirable. This may be alumni chapter or other local association/organization experience
  • Must be able to attend CAN monthly membership meetings
  • Team work driven, attention to detail
  • Participant and/or coach on at least one team from any CAN sports league past or present
  • Working knowledge of CAN sports leagues
  • Active in CAN - strong knowledge of the mission of the Capital Alumni Network and its alumni members
  • Regularly accessible and available to respond in a timely manner to urgent sports league issues
 
COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR
This position is responsible for overseeing all CAN related communications which may include but are not limited to the web site, a periodic email newsletter, event flyers, forms, postings, public relations, etc. 
 
Description:
  • Facilitates effective communication and promotional strategies that support CAN's mission, including all committee activities (Sports, Social, Community Service, Membership, Professional Development/Networking, and Chapters)
  • Identifies, researches and writes material for inclusion in newsletters, web site and other promotions as needed
  • Coordinates with all committee chairs and external partners/vendors for content/promotional submissions
  • Manages deadlines for consistent, timely publication of all communications and promotions
  • Oversees CAN Newsletter Editor and Webmaster
  • Has basic knowledge of PR and how to issue press releases
  • Organizes design/layout of all communications with support from CAN Newsletter Editor and Webmaster
  • Serves as a final clearinghouse for the review of proposals, brochures, invitations or other items not produced directly by the Communications committee to ensure consistency in the CAN message

Qualifications:

  • BS/BA degree from four-year college
  • Should have demonstrated experience in marketing, promotion, and working on multiple projects simultaneously with focus on producing written publications (whether hard-copy print or electronic medium)
  • Board experience desirable. This may be alumni chapter or other local association/organization experience
  • Active in CAN with a strong knowledge of the mission of the Capital Alumni Network and its alumni members
  • Ideal candidate is an accomplished communications/marketing professional, with knowledge and experience across a broad spectrum of traditional public relations and marketing communications
 
SOCIAL DIRECTOR
Plans and oversees all social events for organization.
Description:
  • Work with sports chair/director on all sports-related social event planning
  • Maintain the social areas of the CAN website
  • Negotiate, develop, and distribute a Request for Proposal (RFP) for all sports leagues beer and bar sponsor
  • Provide assistance and coordination/contacts for social events with/for CAN Chapters
  • Coordinate and promote all CAN-sanctioned social events, sports, philanthropic
  • CAN liaison with all local sports teams, Caps, Wizards, Redskins, DC United, Nationals, Orioles, Freedom, etc
  • CAN liaison with our local bar and beer vendors for social event coordination
  • Responsible for attaining items for events and promotional raffles/giveaways to CAN membership from our vendors
  • CAN liaison for Make-A-Wish Foundation
  • Develop and Standardize VIP cards for all bars sponsorship/shirts
Qualifications:
  • BS/BA degree from four-year college
  • Board experience desirable. This may be alumni chapter or other local association/organization experience
  • Must be able to attend CAN monthly membership meetings
  • Team work driven, attention to detail
  • Active in CAN - strong knowledge of the mission of the Capital Alumni Network and its alumni members
  • Demonstrated experience in event planning for a large organization
 
AT-LARGE DIRECTOR
Serves in an advisory role to the Executive Committee
Description:
  • Duties as assigned by officers
  • Attendance at monthly membership meetings, board meetings as deemed necessary and appropriate
  • Votes on matters brought before the Executive Committee
  • Sits on one of the standing committees (sports, social, community service, membership) and performs duties of other committee members
  • Serves as base of knowledge, valuable resource for organization as a whole
Qualifications:
  • Must be either Past-President of CAN or served in similar senior leadership capacity within an alumni organization
  • Must be able to attend monthly meetings, EC and board meetings
 
COMMUNITY SERVICE DIRECTOR
This position is responsible for leading the community service efforts of the Capital Alumni Network and its members.
 
Description:
  • Work with CAN member institutions to determine the types of community service activities in which they are engaged and identify possible opportunities for CAN-wide participation.
  • Organize fall and spring “CAN-sponsored” community service event.
  • Assist individual member institutions with the identification and management of philanthropic opportunities based on knowledge of organization's philanthropic strategy/vision
  • Write articles for CAN newsletters

  Qualifications:

  • BS/BA degree from four-year college or university
  • Passion for community service and desire to take an active role in reshaping the perception of CAN and establishing the organization as a resource within the community
  • Experience identifying, coordinating and managing community service activities
  • Board experience desirable. This may be alumni chapter or other local association/organization experience
  • Active in CAN with a strong knowledge of the mission of the Capital Alumni Network and its members/member institutions

ADVISORY COMMITTEE DIRECTOR

This position is responsible for leading the Advisory Committee (AC), which is a forum for CAN member chapters to express opinions and ideas on how CAN operates and offer suggestions on how CAN could better serve its members.
 
Description:
  • Leads a diverse group of alumni chapters organized to be a sounding board for new ideas and areas of improvement for CAN.
  • Works with member institutions to review CAN policies.  Reports to the CAN Board.
  • The purpose of the Advisory Committee is to serve as
    a liaison between the individual Capital Alumni Network (CAN) Chapters
    and the CAN Executive Committee.  The PAC is charged with the following
    tasks.
  • Ensures, through participation with the member chapters, that the Capital Alumni Network continues to promote and serve the best interests of its members.
  • Serves as a resource and promotes the sharing and dissemination of information among member chapters in an effort to strengthen their local chapter.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVES (3 Total - Voted in by AC Chapters)

1. SPORTS COMMITTEE LIAISON
Overview:
  • Assist Sports Director with all sports league administration (as needed)
  • Lead the Advisory Committee sports committee and keep Advisory Committee sports committee apprised of any issues going on within Sports
  • Keep Sports Director/Asst. Sports Chair/Sports Commissioners aware of Advisory Committee recommendations of changes to specific sports.
  • Keep Sports Director aware of Advisory Committee’s recommendations of new sports to add (either as new leagues or 1-time/mulitple-time events)
  • Help identify candidates for commissioners
  • Help with team selection process for all sports leagues
  • This position could double as Assistant Sports Chair depending as Sports Chair desires.

2. COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE LIAISON
Overview:
  • Assists the Director of Community Service on the CAN Board.
  • Answers questions with CAN member chapters to determine the types of community service activities in which they are engaged and identify possible opportunities for CAN-wide participation.
  • Track the members who are interested in assisting with CAN-wide community service activities
  • Assist Director to write articles for CAN newsletters

3.  SOCIAL COMMITTEE LIAISON
