I. Welcome (Kevin Folk, President, BoD)

Thank you to all for coming out. Discussions will be held tonight around a
proposed survey to participants to gauge areas of interest and growth desired
in CAN

All present introduced themselves – names, school and upcoming chapter
event. Please see CAN website to view upcoming events.

II. Committee Updates

PR (Greg Merritt, Director of Communications, BoD)

o Remember that all Presidents and POCs have the ability to update their chapter page on the site and ask to have events featured in the monthly calendar

o Johns Hopkins Open House on 11/14/07 from 4:30-7PM featuring graduate programs including biotechnology, business, computer science, education, engineering, and public health. For more information, go to www.mcc.jhu.edu. For questions, call 301-294-7000 (see details on CAN
website)

Community Service (Bekah Meyerowitz, Membership Chair, EC)

o Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Walkathon on 11/17/07. Event enables over 180 local agencies to raise funds to help prevent and end homelessness. We are encouraging individuals and chapter so select a charity of their choice, start a CAN team for that charity and spread the word to family and friends. On the day of the Walk all CAN participants will meet up at the Natural History Museum at 8:30AM to walk together (see details on CAN website)

Sports (Chris Maurer, Director of Sports, BoD)

o Flag Football. Three weeks remain of the season with the play-offs occurring on the 12th, 13th and 19th of January (see details on CAN website)

o Volleyball. The National Cathedral School has been confirmed as the location. Games will be on Sundays between Noon and 5PM.  Applications will be up on the website by 11/16. Last year’s team fee was $560 – this year might have an increase. One commissioner is still needed – if interested, contact Chris

o Basketball. Though no location has been secured, still on schedule to start in January. Applications will be up on the website by 11/16. Last year’s team fee was $250 (without paid refs) – this year will be significantly higher. Reffing clinics will be held this year and the final games might
occur at Verizon Center

o Softball. Interviewing this week for new commissioner

o Soccer. Need two commissioners – season will start in March.

III. Survey.

Based on feedback from previous meetings, the EC has compiled a preliminary survey to better understand the needs and wants of CAN participants.

The EC would like the feedback of those present as to the questions asked – what is not needed and what should be added. The survey was passed out and attendees had a couple minutes to review and were then broken out into three groups – social, community service and sports – to focus more.

Overall Thoughts

o Important to have an introduction to the survey where it is made clear that the individual note in what capacity they are taking the survey – as an individual, representing their chapter as the President, representing their chapter as a coach, etc.

o Since the survey can be taken anonymously, have the last question ask if they would like to become more involved in planning and then prompted to send an email to the appropriate Chair (community service, social, sports)

o Specify questions in terms of how CAN is seen currently and how they would like to view CAN in the future (i.e. perhaps currently a sports league but can and want it to be more)

o Be careful of overall number of questions so as to not scare those taking the survey

o Give more thought to having an entire section on sports – focus equally on all areas

Sports

o In the sports section, might be best to have ability to rate each sport as to their significance/importance so that those in charge know where to put more energy, etc.

o Allow space for ‘other’ when asking what additional sports would like to be seen included

Social

o Non-sports events are wanted by the majority

o Perhaps a more routine calendar can be established to allow for quarterly social events

o These events could include: networking (i.e. wine and cheese night at a Smithsonian), professional development, ‘best practices’ event, speaker series (i.e. related to elections), embassy events

Community Service

o Questions need to get to understanding if chapters want more overall CAN community service events, help with individual chapter events or assistance in uniting with one or two other chapters

o Also explore hands-on service events versus/in addition to philanthropic (monetary donation) events

o Need to realize that majority of schools are focused on the region their school is located in and thus perhaps more hesitant to be involved in local agencies

o If possible when raising money, if some could go back to each school’s scholarship fund, it would be an easier/better ‘sell’ to chapter headquarters
