Week 4 of our season will see 6 teams in the top 10 off with a bye and only 2 games pitting ranked teams against each other. Recapping last week’s games of the week, #1 Michigan drubbed formerly #4 JMU 51-8, #11 Florida won the Cocktail Party over #17 Georgia 15-7, #3 NC State pounded #16 Alabama 26-6, and unranked George Washington won the Battle of DC by blanking #14 American, 26-0. Welcome to the top 25: VT after starting the season 3-1; Tulane which has also started out 3-1 and has given up only 21 points for an average of 5.25 per game; Clemson and perennial bottom dweller Ohio State which has started out 2-1 beating up on Georgetown and Dayton. Michigan is our no-mercy team of the week after lighting up power JMU for 51 points. We’re told at the poll that the reason UM ran up the score was “Because we could!” Somewhere in the south, Steve Spurrier is smiling. Results of our Mini- Poll of the week: Which Team Talks the Most Smack? Maryland, not surprisingly, takes top spot for this week, however, could this fuel others to step up to the plate and try and out duel the Terrapins for late season talk-smack supremacy?

GAME OF THE WEEK

#11 Purdue (2-1) vs. #12 Florida (2-0)

Purdue has regained their respect after demolishing Minnesota 38 to nil and Florida looks to keep on rolling after claiming the “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” Game Trophy. Though this game appears to have a lot on the line as far as Division placement, we on the CP wonder if Purdue will react to the hype the Wolverines are stirring up and bring their “A” game? Or are they just sitting back and waiting for the Tournament? This game will answer those questions.

Prediction: Purdue 22 - Florida 16

BEST OF THE REST

#20 Texas (1-0) vs. Texas A&M (1-2)

The Texas Intrastate rivals are at it again. Last year TAMU handed Texas a 12-0 loss, those of you keeping track at home…that’s a shut out. Texas must have been home ooohing and aaahing their beautiful women on campus instead of representing on the football field.

Prediction: Texas 14 - Texas A&M 7

#9 Johns Hopkins (1-0) vs. #17 Indiana (1-0)

These two teams have only one game under their belts and look to stay in the undefeated club. Indiana is in a very competitive Division and could use a non Division victory to stay in the hunt for the Alvarez Division Title. Lets see if Hopkins can get their offense rolling after only getting 14 points against Emory.

Prediction: Doctors 28 - Hoosiers 14

Say it Ain’t So

#23 Tulane (3-1) vs. Richmond (1-1)

Whaaat! Tulane is 3-1? Are our eyes deceiving us? This is a true test of how good they really are while taking on the Spiders of Richmond. Should Tulane win they will be 4-1 and should Florida get taken down by Purdue, Florida will be 2-1. What does that mean? Tulane will be hosting the number one spot in the Dooley Division!

Prediction: Tulane 15 - Richmond 13

Week 3 coaches poll

Week 3 of our season will see 6 teams in the top 25 off with a bye and 5 games pitting ranked teams against each other. Recapping last week’s games of the week, former #11 JMU up-ended #4 Purdue 19-12, #13 Tufts beat #14 Notre Dame 12-6 and #1 NC State stayed unbeaten after demolishing #23 Texas A&M, 29-7. Curiously, NC State drops to #3 even after their win. Welcome to the top 25 Cal, Harvard and Indiana, who beat GW in division play 13-0 this past weekend. It will be interesting to see how things shake out, but both polls so far have had five teams from the Alvarez division included in the top 25 this week, with GW sitting just outside. Also be on the lookout for the no-mercy Maryland Terrapins who hammered Baylor 53-0 last week. Some teams may not score 53 all season!

Dropped out: #17 George Washington, #20 Michigan State, #23 Texas A&M, #25 North Carolina

Also receiving votes: Again, every team except Baylor and Northwestern (sorry, guys); however, these teams look to break into the Top 25: Yale (62), George Washington (57), Pittsburgh (55), Delaware (51), and Clemson (46).

GAME OF THE WEEK

#1 Michigan (1-0) vs. #4 JMU (0-0)

This matchup has more on the line than the Baltimore Ravens have to protect Joe Flacco and his Boomer Esiason style of throw. This one should decide the Schembechler Division winner. The Wolverines have held their two opponents to 8 points for a Point Against Average (PA) of 4 per game. Their offense has been nothing but spectacular by putting up an average of 27.5 per game. However, JMU just knocked off last year’s league champion with a stellar defense.

Prediction: This one’s going to overtime!
Michigan 23 - JMU 21

BEST OF THE REST

#11 Florida (1-0) vs. #17 Georgia (2-0)
“The World’s Largest Outdoor ****tail Party” they call it. Will the name hold up to the hype for the Capital Alumni Network League? Will the DC Bulldogs go jumping up and down in the end zone after scoring a TD and get a celebration penalty? We can only hope.

Prediction: Florida 42 - Georgia 30

#3 NC State (2-0) vs. #16 Alabama (1-0)
You the coaches decided to hurt the Wolfpack’s feelings by voting them from #1 to #3. Scouting reports indicate that the lack of respect has lit a fire in them. The Crimson Tide look to take down and tame the mighty Wolfpack.

Prediction: N.C. State 36 - Alabama 18

Battle of DC

#14 American (0-0) vs. George Washington (0-1)

Who has bragging rights for DC will come down to this one single game, nothing else matters. The team that loses most likely will not be accepting academic students any longer and will divert its attention to more meathead-like students to boost future CAN flag football squads.

Prediction: GDubs 17 -American 16

Week 2 coaches poll

Here it is, finally, our first Coach’s Poll (CP). What better way to provide some reading material and Smacktalk for your lunch
time breaks. So sit back, relax and chomp down (No Gator’s that is not in reference to you, you all get enough attention with your Tim Tebow and special editions on ESPN) on your left over Meatloaf, because we are bringing you Famous John Madden quote’s and CAN Flag Football Rankings.

Purdue, ironically, the defending champions received 10 first place votes. However, irony plays right back with Purdue sitting at the number 4 position while NC State holds the first spot with only 1 first place vote. Hey I just tell it how it is, numbers don’t lie.

We also would like to welcome the newcomers to the League; Dayton, Northwestern, Boston and Central Florida (UCF). We on the CP wonder how Mr. Maurer and his special little computer generates the schedule because it appears CAN wastes no time to test the newbies. Apparently there are a few formulas in his schedule matrix: Dayton vs. #23 Texas A&M, UCF vs. #6 Carnegie Mellon, and Northwestern vs. #3 Penn State.

Here is what you have been waiting for ... The Rankings:

into the Top 25: Clemson (91), Richmond (80), Iowa (67), Virginia Tech (67), and Cal (60).

GAME OF THE WEEK
#11 JMU (1-0) vs. #4 Purdue (0-0)

Though the score of the JMU vs. Carnegie Mellon game is not posted and JMU only won 6 to nil on Illinois we expect this to be the highlight of the weekend. Defense wins championships (isn’t that right 2007-08 Flag Football Champions?), so can JMU and their defense hold off Purdue’s offense?

"If you see a defensive team with dirt and mud on their backs they've had a bad day." -John Madden

"The only yardstick for success our society has is being a champion. No one remembers anything else." - John Madden

Prediction: Purdue 18 and JMU 13

BEST OF THE REST
#14 Notre Dame (0-0) vs. #13 Tufts (0-0)

A yes - ol’ lucky number 13. Ummmm wait a minute ohhh irony has struck again. The Irish look to defeat Lucky number 13 and the Tufts.

"Nah. Those names are all Irish. Sounds more like a funeral parlor."
"No matter what they do ... they can’t really screw it up."

Prediction: Notre Dame 26 and Tufts 23

#1 NC State (1-0) vs. #23 Texas A&M (1-0)

Don’t let this game fool you it was darn close to being the Game of the Week due to it being a Bryant Division face-off. This game could decide who will win the division and post a great seed in the Tournament. Texas A&M beat up on newbie Dayton 26-0. Can their O-Line keep back NC State and their pass rush to keep up the high scoring offense?

"Hey, the offensive linemen are the biggest guys on the field, they're bigger than everybody else, and that's what makes them the biggest guys on the field."

Prediction: NC State 31 and Texas A&M 20

- Chris Schlecta (UCF), Matt Statler (WVU), Shirley Panek (FSU)
