II. Organizational Status Report

    a.  The Board ratified the Bylaws on July 1, 2008.

    b. The Board is currently working on a Strategic Plan.  It has met individually with Committee Chairs and will begin to formulate a draft plan.  From there, the process will be similar to that of the Bylaws where the draft strategic plan will be submitted to the Advisory Committee for review, feedback and open discussion during a working group session.

    c. The Board is finalizing the application for the Business Development Committee Chair position.  The application process, similar to that of Communications and Community Service, will begin shortly.

    d. The Board has made selections for the Communications and Community Service Chairperson positions.  These selections have been forwarded to the Advisory Committee for its consent approval.  The AC has until Friday to provide its consent.

III. Committee Updates

    a. Advisory Committee

        i. If your chapter is not a part of the AC, the application is up online and we encourage all to apply (‘rolling’ application).
ii. The AC will hold a meeting on September 22, 2008 at GMU, beginning at either 7 or 7:30 pm.
iii. If an AC Representative was placed on a Committee not of their choosing, please email your corresponding AC Rep along with the Committee you wish to join.
iv. Mel asked whether there was anyone who did not get the recent emails about voting on the Committee Chair positions.

    b. Communications Committee

        i. The Board has made its selection for the Chairperson position and has forwarded it to the AC for its consent approval.  The AC was given until Friday to vote to approve/disapprove the Board’s selection.

    c. Community Service Committee

        i. The Board has made its selection for the Chairperson position and has forwarded it to the AC for its consent approval.  The AC was given until Friday to vote to approve/disapprove the Board’s selection.

ii. Two Community Service Committee meetings have been held.  Unfortunately, turn out has not been as high as expected based on the emphasis that was placed on community service during the election process.  If you wish to join the Committee, email AC Director, Melissa Coughlin.

iii. CAN is holding a food drive in conjunction with this year’s Softball Tournament.  The goal is to donate 1500 lbs. of food.  Please pass this information on to your chapter’s softball teams.

    d. Membership Committee

        i. Andy Hyson of Tulane previously raised the question that many chapters have – how do you identify leaders in your club and plan for leadership changes.  The Board has begun brainstorming over ideas of how to provide such information to the chapters.  So far, two ideas have surfaced: (1) a weekend seminar tackling these and other such issues; and (2) a weekly or bi-weekly series where chapter leaders and other speakers help to address these best practices issues.  Look for more information about this in the coming months.

    e. Social Committee

        i. Tickets to the Legg Mason Tennis Classic Princeton Review night are SOLD OUT, however there are still tickets available to individual sessions. The link and contact information to purchase tickets is available on the CAN website.

ii. The July Happy Hour at Finn macCool’s was a success.  CAN is going to try and do a similar event on a semi-annual basis.

iii. Elaine and Melissa are working to pick a date and send an email out to committee members in order to hold an upcoming social committee meeting.

iv. DC United is pairing with OnTap to host pre-game parties featuring live music and all-inclusive food, beer and wine specials before upcoming DC United soccer matches (August 23rd, September 13 and October 4th).  Check the CAN website for more information about ordering tickets.

        v. Elaine is working with the Washington Capitals and Wizards for some ticket packages for their upcoming seasons.

vi. Buy Your Friend a Drink (BYFAD) is going to re-introduce itself to CAN during the upcoming flag football season.  For extra incentive in this year’s softball tournament, BYFAD has donated pre-paid BYFAD cards to the winner and runner-up of the softball tournament ($250/$150) and to the player who hits the most home runs during the tournament ($50).

    f. Sports Committee

        i. Soccer:  Congratulations to Georgia Tech, 2008 7s Champ, and George Washington, 2008 11s Champ.

IV.   Guest Speaker – Nikki McDermott from Make-A-Wish Foundation®

Nikki McDermott, of the Make-A-Wish Foundation®, spoke about the organization’s upcoming 25th Annual Triathlon on September 20, 2008 in Bethany Beach, Delaware.  Similar to the Scavenger Hunt, Make-A-Wish will have a CAN division for individuals or teams.  You may register individually or as part of a relay team.  The three legs of the race include: a 1.5K swim; a 40K bike ride and a 10K run.
